Already have a Bachelor’s degree in a field unrelated to teaching? Want to teach the skills you have learned in your career in the classroom? The Alternative Certification Progam is for you! Our unique online modules allow candidates to learn at their own pace, with a focus on essential topics such as lesson planning, assessment, classroom management, and more.
Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in their content area and pass a background check.
Who is eligible?
Non-teachers who already have a Bachelor's degree in their desired content area.
What is the cost?
The tuition is affordable and most of the cost is typically absorbed by the school in which the candidate is employed.
What are the other requirements?
You must have an employment agreement with one of our partner schools/districts in SC.

The Teach Right USA team will reach out to learn about your motivation and collect the necessary documents to evaluate your eligibility.
Pass the Praxis
Take and pass the PRAXIS in your content area.
Apply at a school
Apply for a teaching position at one of the Charter Institute at Erskine’s charter schools, or one of our other partner schools/school districts. Follow their hiring process, and start teaching!
Complete TRUSA Components
Complete our virtual courses and attend 10 professional development sessions while teaching in the classroom under the mentorship of a Teacher Coach in your school.
Receive Alternative Certification
The TRUSA team will recommend you to the South Carolina Department of Education for teacher certification! You will then enter your induction year at your school.

Frequently Asked Questions
To qualify for the Alternative Certification program, participants must have:
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major related to the certification area.
- A passing score on the PRAXIS content area exam approved by the State Board of Education.
- Employment as a teacher in a Charter Institute at Erskine Charter School or one of our other partner schools/districts in the relevant subject area.
The alternative certification program is 100% self-paced and asychronous. The professional development sessions will be completed over the course of a year. After receiving approval, you will enter your induction year at your school.
